The Indianapolis News 13 June 1952 |
John Harris was supposedly adopted at about 2 years old, according to family stories. I suspect John had been living at the Frances Comfort Thomas Home in Columbus, Indiana. John Harris was born on December 10, 1914 in Attica, Indiana, and was rumored to be the biological son of a family member. I thought his biological mother was Velma Kate Rodefer, sister of Virginia. It was also rumored that his father was a traveling musician, and that John spent time in an orphanage. I think the orphanage rumor is true since it is known that one of his biological brothers had lived in one. I think the biological son rumor is because John's birth parents were an unrelated Harris family. I no longer think Velma Kate is his mother.
Charles Harris was born in Canada and had one brother. I don't know much more about his ancestors or family other than hos father was Canadian and his mother was American. He had a number of business dealings. He owned a pecan farm south of Albany, Georgia called Chooleewahee, possibly off of Petoria Rd. There may have been a village called Petoria/Pretoria in that area. He was also an insurance agent.
There is record of a plantation south of Albany called Chooleewahee. The owner had owned a large number of slaves in the time of American slavery. Don't know if that property is related to Charles Harris' property.
Virginia Rodefer Harris was involved in the local choir, the D.A..R, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and many other things. The family traveled often.
